  1. A GOOD KNIGHT'S TALE - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the paperback, "Dragonlance Tales, No.3."

Back in 1967 when I lived in Middlebury, Vermont I took a short ride up into the nearby wooded mountains where Middlebury College had a few buildings that were used during the summer months as a school for would-be writers. It was called "The Bread Loaf Conference for writers". I entered the office building and asked the lady at the enrollment table about taking a summer evening course, and during my inquiry I learned that no alumni from that writer's conference ever went on to become a professional writer. I also learned that as a new student I would also be required to act as a waiter and janitor during my term, serving meals at the 6 pm dinner, and cleaning up afterwards. So I said, "No thank you," and left.

But as I walked toward my car I heard some laughing and splashing off in the nearby woods and wondered if there was a swimming hole there, so I walked across a short open grassy area and entered a spot that looked like a pathway into the woods from where the sounds seemed to be coming . . .

I worked my way along a narrow path under a canopy of tree limbs for about twenty yards, and came upon a scene of incredible beauty; a circular pool of deep, clear water about 30 or so yards wide, surrounded by closely packed trees. To the right a grassy knoll made a perfect spot for a picnic, and that is what I saw; Sunlight coming down through the open space over the pool onto four teenagers, two boys and two girls that I assumed were students at Middlebury College. They were swimming and having lunch in that special dream-like place. Quietly, I left, not wanting to disturb them.

When I was drawing this picture I thought of that "heavenly" swimming hole up in the woods of Vermont. But this pool is different, it is lit by moonlight, and beneath the surface lies something ominous . . .
